What to see in the neighbourhood of Valverde in Madrid

One of the most interesting sights to see in Valverde is Ciudad BBVA. This is a complex of eight horizontal buildings of three different heights. Each of the horizontal buildings is named after a continent, like Oceania, Asia, Antarctica, North America, Europe, Africa, South America and New Zealand.

The streets that separate these buildings are named after the seas and oceans in between the continents, like Calle Pacífico (the Pacific Ocean), Calle Índico (the Indian Ocean), Calle Mediterráneo (the Mediterranean Sea), Calle Atlántico (the Atlantic Ocean) and Calle Caribe (the Caribbean Sea).

Right in the centre of the complex, you can find a circular plaza with a diameter of 100 meters, and this is where the main building is: an irregular, egg-shaped building called “La Vela”.

The main building is 93 meters high, 82 meters in diameter and only 16 meters wide, and it has 19 floors.  In order to achieve its form (a sail), the design consists of in total 35 different curvy elements, constructed on the exterior of the 19 floors.

The complex consists of 114,000m2 of offices and the construction of this building cost about 620 million euros, although some say the overall investment was over 900 million euros. The name of the building was chosen by the employees themselves after a name contest had been organised.
